Military Museum Scotland SCIO Visit to Blyth Battery

In April 2024, we were delighted to welcome Military Museum Scotland for a visit.
Our dedicated volunteers enthusiastically gave tours around our historical site which spans both World Wars.

Following the tours, our guests enjoyed a delightful buffet spread and steaming  beverages, all while engaging in lively conversations, fostering a warm atmosphere of camaraderie and shared appreciation for history.

In October 2023, the Blyth Battery Volunteers embarked on a memorable trip to the Military Museum Scotland SCIO.

We were blown away by the the museums volunteers knowledge and their hospitality; we were given an extensive tour of the remarkable museum and spent a fantastic day exploring the exhibits and learning about Scotland's rich military history.

We truly recommend a visit to this museum:

Suffragettes tea party

On Sunday, 24th June 2018 we hosted a tea party to commemorate and celebrate 100 years of (some) women having the vote.

A talk entitled “A woman in a man’s world” was given by Sandra Welburn who joined the ATC as soon they accepted females and despite the odds attained the rank of Major.

Sandra was followed by Holly Durward who talked about the Guiding movement and their emphasis on the capabilities of females.
Then it was time for tea and even the cakes carried suffragette colours!

The final speaker was the late Pam Brown who looked at the history of the fight for the vote, starting as far back as 1832,

covering the Suffragette movement in the early 20th century and discussing their supporters and detractors.

Warwickshire Drownings

On a hot August day in 1917 over 600 soldiers of the Warwickshire Regiment were on a route march from Horton Camp. They stopped to rest on

Blyth beach and were given permission to cool off in the water. Many had never seen the sea and some could not swim.

Tragically no-one understood the strong undercurrents of an ebb tide and very quickly some of the men got into difficulties. Nine young soldiers died.

A service of remembrance was held on the 100th anniversary of their deaths with some of their descendants travelling to attend.
